Udhaar wapas kaise lein: 7 simple rules for shopkeepers

22 October 2026 · 2 min read

Udhaar (credit) keeps customers coming back — but every shopkeeper knows the other side: money stuck with customers who “will pay next week”. Here are seven simple rules that work.

1. Write every udhaar the same minute

Most udhaar is lost in the first hour: the customer leaves, the counter gets busy, and the entry is never written. Record it before the customer walks away — amount, date and what it was for.

2. Always note the phone number

A name alone is not enough. “Ahmed” could be three different people. A phone number lets you remind them later and stops arguments about who owes what.

3. Set a limit for each customer

Decide how much udhaar a customer can take before they pay something back. New customers get a small limit; regular, reliable ones get more.

4. Agree a payment date

“Kab tak de denge?” — ask it every time. A clear date makes the reminder feel normal, not rude.

5. Remind politely, on time

Most people don’t refuse to pay — they simply forget. A short, polite WhatsApp message with the exact balance works better than a face-to-face tagaza:

Assalam o Alaikum Ahmed bhai, aap ka baqaya Rs 2,500 hai. Jab mumkin ho, ada kar dein. Shukriya — Ali Mobiles

6. Show the full statement

When a customer says “itna to nahi tha”, show them every entry with its date. A clear statement ends the argument in seconds.

7. Check your total every week

Once a week, look at the total udhaar to collect and the customers who haven’t paid for 30 days or more. Those are the ones to call first.
